Almost everything written about RVing in Florida assumes flat ground. Clermont is the exception, and it is the reason we get a different mix of calls in Lake County than we do thirty miles east in Orlando.
Elevation is not a novelty here - it changes which systems are working hardest, and it changes what a fault means when it appears.
Why does my auto-level system struggle in Clermont when it works fine everywhere else?
Because an automatic levelling system has a limited amount of travel, and a sloped site spends more of it.
These systems level rather than lift. Park across a slope steep enough and the controller runs a jack to the end of its stroke before the coach is level, cannot reach its target, and aborts. Owners read that as a fault. It is the system reporting that it has run out of range.
The fix is the order you do things in, not a repair. Correct side to side first by driving up onto blocks or ramps under the tires on the low side, chock, and only then let the automatic system handle front to back. On a genuinely sloping site, blocks do the coarse work and the jacks do the fine work.
Worth knowing before you assume the worst: a cycle that aborts is also what low battery voltage looks like, because both hydraulic pumps and electric jack motors pull hard. Check the bank under load before anyone opens a hydraulic system. Our levelling article covers the rest of the sequence.
Do the hills on US 27 actually affect an RV?
Yes, and more on the way down than the way up.
A long descent is a heat problem. Riding the brakes to hold speed on a grade with a heavy trailer behind puts sustained heat into the brake assemblies rather than the short bursts they see on flat roads. That heat is what fatigues components and what makes a marginal brake controller setting show itself.
The related one is load shift. Anything that was merely resting in a bay or a cupboard on flat ground moves on a grade, and we see the consequences afterwards - a shifted battery, a cupboard latch that has failed, a slide room carrying something it should not.
To be straight about our scope: we do not do tires or chassis brake work. What we can do is tell you what we see. If a pre-trip inspection turns up something on the running gear, you get told about it in writing and pointed at a specialist rather than sold something we do not do.
What is camping at Lake Louisa actually like for a big rig?
It is the main event in Lake County and it accommodates larger coaches better than people expect from a state park.
Lake Louisa State Park covers around 4,500 acres with a chain of lakes. Every campsite has 30 and 50 amp electric and water; fifteen sites also have a sewer hookup, and there are pull-through sites that take rigs up to about 50 feet.
The practical consequence for repairs is that only some sites have sewer, so a good share of the coaches we visit there are running on tanks. That is worth knowing before you book a week: if you are on a site without sewer and something goes wrong with the waste system, the problem escalates faster than it would on a full hookup.
Florida State Parks publish that their full-facility campsites include a dump station as part of the campground, so dumping on the way out is covered.
Are you working on coaches parked at homes as well as campgrounds?
Most of our Clermont work is at houses rather than campgrounds, which is the opposite of the mix in a theme-park town.
Lake County has a lot of residential storage - coaches on side pads, on gravel behind the house, or in a fenced yard. That changes the failure profile completely. A rig that sits between trips has different problems from one that travels: seals take a set in one position, fuel goes stale in the generator, batteries flatten under standing loads, and rodents find the generator bay.
It also changes what a sensible service looks like. For a stored coach the highest-value visit is usually a seals-and-roof inspection plus getting the generator to run under load, not a repair at all.
What does the terrain mean for a coach that lives here permanently?
Two things worth doing that would not be on the list on flat ground.
- Park it level, or as close as you can get, even in storage. A coach stored significantly out of level for months puts a twist through the frame, and that twist shows up first at the slide openings as a room that has started to bind.
- Put real pads under the jacks. Sloped ground plus Florida sand plus a small steel foot is how a jack sinks overnight. Marking the jack rods before bed is the way to tell a sinking jack from a leaking one - if the rods have not moved but the coach is lower, the ground gave way, and no repair fixes that.
Everything else is the standard Central Florida list: roof terminations twice a year, seals conditioned, the generator exercised monthly under load.

Clermont and Lake County RV questions
My levelling system says it cannot level at Lake Louisa. Is it broken?
Probably not. Automatic systems level rather than lift, and a sloped site can put the coach outside their range. Correct side to side with blocks under the tires first, then let the system do front to back. If it still aborts on ground that is close to flat, then it is worth looking at fluid, voltage and sensors.
Do you come out to houses in Clermont or only campgrounds?
Mostly houses, actually. A lot of Lake County coaches live on a pad beside the house between trips, and that is where we do most of our work here. All we need is safe access to the affected system and somewhere to stand.
My RV has been parked at home for eight months. What should I have looked at before a trip?
Roof terminations and seals first, because that is where the expensive damage starts and storage is when it happens unobserved. Then the generator under load, the batteries under load, and a look for pests in the generator and appliance compartments. Sitting is harder on an RV than travelling is.
Do you work on brakes for the hills?
No. Chassis brake work is not something we take on, and we would rather say so than take the job and hand it to somebody else. What we do is report what we see during an inspection, in writing, so you can take it to a specialist with something specific rather than a vague concern.

It is worth taking seriously. A coach held out of level for months puts a diagonal twist through the frame, and slide rooms are held to a tight squareness tolerance, so a room that has begun to bind can be the first sign. Levelling a stored coach is cheap insurance against a much larger repair.
