Mobile RV Repair in Orlando, Florida
Ninety-degree afternoons at eighty percent humidity, and a rooftop air conditioner asked to do more here than anywhere it was designed for.
A rooftop air conditioner that runs but will not cool has three common causes and they are not interchangeable: a failed start capacitor, a failing fan motor, or a coil so fouled that air cannot move through it. They present almost identically to an owner standing inside a hot coach, they cost very different amounts, and the one thing that separates them is measurement rather than guesswork.

Orange County combines the heat, the humidity and the highest concentration of destination campgrounds in Florida, so air conditioning is not a comfort question here, it is the trip.
This page is how the common failures are actually told apart, because the wrong diagnosis in a booked site costs a day you cannot get back.
The AC runs but the air is not cold. What is happening?
Work through it in order of likelihood and cost. The most common finding is a failed start or run capacitor, which is a small component that gives the compressor motor the push it needs to start; when it weakens, the fan often still runs happily while the compressor either hums, trips or never engages, so the unit sounds alive while producing nothing cold. Next is the fan motor, which may run slowly, noisily or only intermittently, and without proper airflow across the coil the system cannot move heat regardless of how well the compressor works. Third is a fouled coil or filter, which is not a failure at all - it is dirt restricting airflow, and it is the one an owner can often fix themselves. Only after those three is a sealed-system refrigerant problem worth considering, and on a rooftop unit that is frequently a replacement rather than a repair.
The Fort Wilderness job: a Berkshire down in the heat
A Forest River Berkshire Class A at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground with a rooftop air conditioner failure. We replaced the Dometic capacitor and the fan motor on site and had cold air running inside ninety minutes. The reason both parts were changed is worth explaining rather than glossing over: the capacitor was the failure, but the fan motor was drawing high and running hot, and a motor in that condition takes the new capacitor down with it within a season. Changing one and leaving the other would have produced a working air conditioner that afternoon and a second call-out later in the same trip. On a booked site in Orlando, a second call-out is not an inconvenience, it is a lost day, and that is the calculation behind doing both while the shroud was already off.
How do I know if it is a capacitor or something worse?

By what the unit does in the first few seconds and by measurement afterwards. A weak capacitor typically produces a hum from the compressor followed by nothing, or a compressor that starts and drops out, while the fan carries on as though nothing is wrong - the unit is running, just not cooling. A fouled coil produces the opposite pattern: everything runs correctly, the air coming out is cool but weak, and the temperature difference between the return and the supply air is smaller than it should be. That difference is the measurement that settles it, and it is what a technician should be taking before quoting anything. Two cautions. A capacitor stores a charge and can hold it after the power is off, so it is not a component to poke at casually. And on many rooftop units it lives in a control box under the shroud, where a cracked shroud has been letting rain in.
How do I stop it failing during a theme-park week?
Reduce the load and clear the airflow, because heat is what kills these units and dirt is what makes them hot. Wash or replace the return-air filters, which are the single most neglected item on an RV and the cheapest thing on this list. Have the coil inspected and cleaned if it is fouled - a coil packed with dust and pollen cannot transfer heat no matter how healthy the compressor is. Check that the shroud is intact and the mounting bolts are properly torqued, since a cracked shroud lets rain into the control box holding the capacitor and the wiring. Park to put the coach's long side in shade if the site allows it, and run the air conditioning before the coach gets hot rather than trying to pull twenty degrees out of a soaked interior at three in the afternoon, which is a losing fight.
Does the pedestal supply matter for an air conditioner?

More than most owners realize, and it is a genuine cause of repeat failures rather than a technicality. When a park is full and every coach is running air conditioning, voltage at the pedestal sags, and a motor fed low voltage draws more current to do the same work, runs hotter and ages fast. Nothing trips and nothing looks wrong, which is why the damage accumulates unnoticed until a compressor or a capacitor gives up in the middle of a booked week. If your coach has two rooftop units and a thirty-amp supply, running both at once is asking more of the pedestal than it has to give. This is the argument for an energy management system rather than a plain surge protector, since only the former disconnects on sustained low voltage - the fault that never produces a spike to react to.
Where do RVs stay around Orlando?
Across a wider spread than the theme parks suggest, and the character varies enormously. Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground is the large destination site inside the resort. Orlando/Kissimmee KOA Journey sits on the Irlo Bronson corridor in Osceola County. Wekiwa Springs State Park is half an hour north in Apopka and is a completely different proposition - spring-fed and wooded rather than themed. Florida State Parks publish that their full-facility campsites include water, electricity and a dump station as part of the campground, which covers Wekiwa. Orlando sits inside our Orlando and Lakeland rate area, so the figures in the pricing table on this page are the ones that apply here. Book state park sites early: Florida residents can reserve eleven months out and non-residents ten, and Wekiwa is one of the busiest in the state.

Orlando and Orange County RV questions
My rooftop AC runs but blows warm air. What is it usually?
Most often a failed start capacitor, which lets the fan keep running while the compressor hums or never engages. After that a failing fan motor, then a coil or filter so fouled that air cannot move through it. They present almost identically from inside the coach and cost very different amounts, which is why measurement rather than guesswork settles it.
Can I replace the capacitor myself?
It is not a component to approach casually. A capacitor stores a charge and can hold it after the power is disconnected, and on most rooftop units it sits in a control box under the shroud alongside live wiring. If you are not confident about discharging it safely, that is the right reason to have someone else do it.
How do I tell a dirty coil from a real failure?
By the pattern. A fouled coil runs correctly and produces air that is cool but weak, with a smaller temperature difference between the return and the supply than there should be. A capacitor failure produces a unit that is running but not cooling at all. Measuring that difference is what a technician should do before quoting.
Why did my AC fail again a few months after a repair?
Frequently because only half the problem was addressed. A fan motor drawing high and running hot will take a new capacitor down with it within a season, so changing the capacitor alone produces a working unit that afternoon and another failure later. Sustained low voltage at a busy pedestal does the same thing more slowly.
Can I run two rooftop air conditioners on a 30-amp supply?
Not reliably, and trying is hard on both units. Thirty amps does not comfortably support two rooftop units at once, and in a full park where pedestal voltage is already sagging you are asking motors to work harder on less. That combination is a real cause of premature compressor and capacitor failure.
Does a cracked AC shroud matter?
Yes, far more than it looks. The shroud is cheap plastic but it is what keeps rain out of the control box holding the capacitor and the wiring. A cracked shroud through a wet Florida season is frequently the upstream cause of the electrical failure underneath it, so it is worth replacing rather than taping.
Can you come out to Fort Wilderness and the resort campgrounds?
Yes, and it is a good share of our Orange County work. Give us the loop and site number when you book, and check whether the campground wants contractors to sign in at the gate. Knowing the coach make, model and year lets us bring the right part rather than making two trips.
Which rate area is Orlando in?
Our Orlando and Lakeland area, so the figures in the pricing table on this page apply here rather than the statewide service call. Travel is inside that rate rather than billed on top, so a resort site and a driveway in Winter Park cost the same to reach.
