Because a small steel jack foot on gravel, sand or grass concentrates a lot of weight on very little area, and Florida ground moves with the water table.
The test costs nothing and settles it definitively. Before you go to bed, mark each jack rod where it emerges from the cylinder body. In the morning, look at the marks.
- The rod has retracted into the cylinder. The system let the coach down - that is internal bypass, fluid crossing inside a cylinder or past a valve, and it is a hydraulic repair.
- The rod has not moved but the coach is lower. The jacks are exactly where you left them and the ground gave way. No repair fixes that; the answer is surface area.
For the second case, use a large rigid pad under each foot. A thin offcut of plywood flexes and does very little - the point is spreading the load, so the pad has to be stiff and wide enough to matter. It also stops a jack foot punching into a gravel pad or leaving craters in grass.
This is the single most common misdiagnosis we correct in the western communities, and it is worth knowing before you pay anyone to open a hydraulic system.

- Whether there is a gate, and whether it needs to be opened for us.
- Whether shore power is available at the coach. Out here a rig is often parked away from the house on an extension arrangement, and an electrical fault cannot be properly diagnosed on a supply that is itself the problem.
Two minutes on the phone about that saves a wasted visit, and it is the difference we notice most between town and country calls.
Does storing a coach on grass or gravel matter?
More than storing it on concrete, in three specific ways.
Moisture from below. Ground that holds water keeps the underside damp for longer after rain, which works on the underbelly, the frame and anything unprotected down there.
Jack settling, as above, but over months rather than overnight - a coach that settles unevenly over a season is a coach held slightly out of level, and that twist shows up at the slide openings as a room that has started to bind.
Vegetation and pests. Grass and brush against the coach give rodents and insects a route in, and a generator bay is a sheltered, dry place. Keeping a clear margin around the coach is worth as much as any product.
None of that argues against acreage storage - the space and the shade are genuinely worth having. It argues for pads under the jacks, a clear perimeter, and looking underneath occasionally.

My coach was level last night and is not this morning. Is a jack leaking?
