Working on a fifth wheel parked on site in Bahia Honda, Florida

Mobile RV Repair at Bahia Honda and the Middle Keys

In the Keys the repair is rarely the hard part. Getting the right part to mile marker 37 is.

TL;DR - Quick Answer

Two things define RV repair in the Keys and neither of them is the weather. The first is salt: everything metal on a coach parked at Bahia Honda is being attacked continuously, and it goes for the parts nobody looks at - fasteners, jack rods, electrical terminals and the aluminum under a roof sealant bead. The second is logistics.

Bahia Honda State Park sits at around mile marker 37 with the Atlantic on one side and the Gulf on the other. There is nowhere in Florida where a coach gets more salt on it and nowhere with less margin for getting a parts order wrong.

Everything below is written around those two facts, because they change what a sensible repair plan looks like more than any weather forecast does.

What does living on a Keys site actually do to a coach?

Salt does not attack the coach evenly. It goes after specific components, and none of them are the ones people inspect. The exposed chrome on hydraulic jack rods is first, and it matters because Lippert's own service guidance is to discard a jack leg rather than reseal it once the rod is scored or corroded - a damaged rod destroys a new seal almost immediately. Fasteners and the metal flanges underneath roof sealant go next, so a termination can look perfectly sound while the flange beneath it corrodes away. Electrical terminals follow: a corroded connection develops resistance, resistance under load makes heat, and heat makes the connection worse until a shore power plug melts. Plastic is not spared either, because salt-laden air combined with unbroken sun embrittles an air conditioner shroud faster than either does alone. None of it announces itself. All of it is found by looking.

The Bahia Honda salt job: an Airstream shroud that came apart

A 2022 Airstream Classic parked at Bahia Honda State Park, with heavy corrosion on the rooftop air conditioner shroud and a vent fan blade cracked from salt embrittlement. We replaced the fan blade and the shroud on site. What makes that job worth describing is the order of causes: the shroud did not fail because it was old, it failed because it lives in salt air, and a cracked shroud is a water path straight into the control box that holds the capacitor and the wiring. Fix the fan and leave the shroud and you have bought a few months. That is the pattern in the Keys generally - the visible failure is usually downstream of an enclosure that stopped keeping weather out, and the cheap plastic part is the one that decides whether the expensive part fails again next season.

How do you plan a repair when there is one road in?

By spending more time on the phone than we would anywhere else in Florida. On the mainland a wrong guess about a part costs an hour. Here it can cost a day, because the nearest real counter is a long way up US 1 and there is no alternative route around a backup. So the call before the visit does more work: we want the make, model and year, what the symptom actually looks like, and any numbers you can read off a data plate or a control board. Photographs help enormously - a picture of a label costs you nothing and settles what would otherwise be a guess. If a part is genuinely unknown until the coach is opened, we will say so and plan for two visits rather than promise one. That is a better conversation to have before we drive down than after.

Is an air conditioner enough down here, or does the humidity beat it?

A rooftop unit is fighting a different battle in the Keys than it is inland. Air coming off the water is close to saturated, so a large share of the unit's capacity goes into removing moisture rather than lowering temperature. That is why a coach can feel clammy at a comfortable thermostat reading and why the unit runs far more than the outside temperature alone suggests it should. Before assuming the unit is weak, measure the temperature split between the return grille and the nearest supply register - a healthy unit still pulls roughly sixteen to twenty-two degrees out of the air. If the split is there, the unit is working and the humidity is the problem. If it is not, the usual suspects are a blocked return filter, coils packed with salt film, or a run capacitor that has drifted. Salt film on the condenser is the specifically local one.

What should I rinse, and how often, on a Keys coach?

Rinse after any blow off the water, and rinse the parts nobody photographs. The paintwork is the least important thing on the list. What matters is the underside, the hydraulic jack rods, the shore power inlet and plug, the awning rail fasteners and the roof hardware, because those are where salt sits and works. Fresh water and a low-pressure hose is enough - this is about removing the deposit before it has time to act, not about scrubbing. Do it before the coach is put away rather than at the start of the next trip, since months of storage with salt on it is the damage, not the drive home. If you take one habit from this page, make it wiping the jack rods clean before they retract. Grit and salt drawn back past the seal is the single most common cause of a leaking jack in this county.

Do you actually come out to the Keys?

Yes, and we plan those visits differently from mainland ones. A Keys job is booked with more information gathered up front and a wider window, because the drive is long and the traffic on US 1 is not predictable. What that means for you: give us as much detail as you can when you book, tell us your departure date if you are on a short stay, and let us know the park and the site number so access can be sorted before anyone sets off. If the fault is something that can be made safe to travel on rather than fully repaired, we will say so and let you decide - getting a coach off the chain and repaired properly on the mainland is sometimes the cheaper answer, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a difficult visit.

Where RVs park in the middle Keys

Sites here are limited, booked far ahead, and almost all of them are on the water - which is the whole appeal and the whole problem.

FAQ

Florida Keys RV repair questions

How far into the Keys do you come?

Down the chain to the middle Keys, including Bahia Honda and the parks either side of it. Travel is inside the service call rather than billed separately. What we do ask for is a wider booking window than on the mainland, because US 1 traffic is not something anybody can schedule around reliably.

My jack will not hold and the coach is on the water. Seal or ground?

Mark each jack rod where it leaves the cylinder before bed and look in the morning. Rods retracted means the hydraulic system let the coach down. Rods unmoved but the coach lower means the ground gave way. In the Keys there is a third possibility worth checking: a rod so corroded that the seal cannot survive, which is a leg replacement rather than a seal kit.

Why does my air conditioner run constantly here but not at home?

Because air off the water is nearly saturated, so a large part of the unit's capacity goes into removing moisture rather than dropping temperature. Measure the split between the return grille and the nearest supply register. If it is around sixteen to twenty-two degrees the unit is fine and the humidity is doing this, not a fault.

Can you get parts quickly down here?

Not as quickly as on the mainland, and pretending otherwise would set you up for a bad week. The nearest real counter is a long drive up the chain. That is exactly why we ask for model numbers and photographs before the visit - the part being right first time is worth far more here than anywhere else we work.

Is there a dump station at Bahia Honda?

Florida State Parks publish that their full-facility campgrounds include a dump station as part of the campground. Check directly for the specific loop you are booked into, because facilities vary within a park and arriving with full tanks on an assumption is a bad afternoon anywhere, let alone at mile marker 37.

Should I cover the RV when it is parked in the Keys?

If you can, and use a breathable RV cover rather than a tarp. It keeps both salt and sun off, which are the two things aging the coach here. A non-breathable cover traps moisture against the surface and trades a salt problem for a mold problem, which in this humidity is not a good swap.

What is the most common Keys repair you get called for?

Corrosion-driven failures on the roof and at electrical connections, and hydraulic jacks. All three share a cause and all three are slowed enormously by rinsing after a blow. The second most common is an air conditioner that is working correctly and being asked to do something the humidity will not allow.

Do I need an appointment or can you come the same day?

Book ahead if you possibly can. Same-day happens, but the drive means a Keys visit takes a bigger slice of a day than a mainland one, so the honest answer is that planning gets you a better outcome than urgency does. If a fault has stopped you traveling, say so when you call and we will tell you what is realistic.
